What does it mean to think about futures?
Cool Futures is a foresight practice built on a simple conviction: the future is not something that happens to you. It is something you design. We exist to give individuals, organizations, and communities the tools, language, and imagination to do exactly that.
1) A positive vision of the future characterized by optimism, creativity, innovation, and opportunities that are exciting, desirable, and beneficial for individuals or society. Example: The programme encourages young people to imagine cool futures shaped by science, art, and environmental responsibility.
2) Futures in which progress is achieved in ways that are sustainable, inclusive, and appealing, especially through new ideas, technology, or cultural change. Example: Investment in clean energy is helping to create cool futures for communities around the world.
3) (informal) An outlook or set of possibilities that inspires confidence, agency, or enthusiasm about what lies ahead. Example: The graduates left the ceremony believing that cool futures were within their reach. Origin: Modern English (21st century), from cool in the sense of "excellent, appealing, or admirable" and futures, referring to the possibilities, alternatives, and opportunities of times ahead.
Usage note: The phrase "cool futures" is commonly used to express an encouraging and forward-looking perspective, emphasizing innovation, hope, resilience, and aspirations for positive change.
ORIGINFrom futures literacy (UNESCO) + the cultural register of 'cool' as discerning, ahead of its time, and worth paying attention to.
We don't predict the future. We expand the range of what you can imagine — and then help you act on that expanded imagination with rigor, creativity, and purpose.
Organizations navigating uncertainty. Educators building futures-ready curricula. Leaders who know the old maps don't fit the new territory. Anyone serious about thinking long-term.
The pace of change is outrunning the tools most people use to make sense of it. Futures literacy is the antidote — not because it tells you what will happen, but because it prepares you for the full range of what might.
Futures Literacy
The capacity to use the future in fundamentally different ways. Not forecasting — futures literacy is about expanding the range of what people can imagine, question, and act on. It is the foundational skill of the 21st century.
Social & Cultural Critique
Futures don't emerge from a vacuum. They are shaped by power, narrative, and culture. We bring a critical lens to the present — examining the assumptions, norms, and stories that constrain or expand what futures are possible.
Transnormal Futures
Beyond the normal. Beyond the expected. Transnormal futures are those that sit outside the dominant paradigm — the ones that challenge, disrupt, and ultimately transform. We specialize in making the transnormal thinkable.
Art, Literature & Culture
The imagination has always lived in art and story. We draw on fiction, film, music, and visual culture as serious sources of futures intelligence — because the most important signals often arrive as metaphor before they arrive as data.
Education & Training
Futures thinking is a learnable skill. We design and deliver education that builds lasting capacity — from executive workshops to university curricula to public courses — so that futures literacy spreads beyond the specialist.
Speaker's Bureau
Ideas need stages. Our speaker's bureau connects organizations with voices at the frontier of futures thinking — keynotes, panels, and conversations that shift the room and leave audiences thinking differently about what comes next.
The future is not a destination. It is a practice.
Prediction is a trap. Imagination is the tool.
The most important futures are the ones nobody is talking about yet.
Cool is not aesthetic. Cool is discernment — knowing what matters before everyone else does.
We are not futurists. We are futures practitioners.
The work is never finished. That's the point.
